Case Study: The Barn, Tytherington

THE BARN,
TYTHERINGTON, BATH

A kitchen designed around the view and the way the home would be experienced

When we first visited The Barn, the kitchen existed only as part of an unfinished timber and steel structure. What it already possessed was scale, light, strong architecture and open views across the surrounding paddocks.

Our role was to turn that potential into a kitchen that strengthened the home around it, creating a balanced and coherent interior, improving the way the space would be experienced and giving the finished property a stronger sense of identity.

DESIGNING AROUND THE EXPERIENCE

An earlier kitchen proposal from a competitor had positioned the sink beneath a side window. Standing in the unfinished barn shell with the sun streaming directly through it, we realised that anyone using the sink would be looking straight into the light, making it likely the blind would need to be lowered and one of the room’s key sources of natural light lost.

By moving the sink to face the paddock, the side window could remain open to the light while the working kitchen gained a far more enjoyable outlook. That one decision helped reshape the entire design, allowing the tall cabinetry to be centred within the architecture and creating a stronger relationship between the kitchen, the exposed structure, the open-plan space and the views beyond.

MAKING SCALE FEEL INTENTIONAL

In a room of this scale, proportion and visual balance become critical. The tall walnut cabinetry was centred within the architecture and aligned with the exposed steelwork, creating symmetry and giving the kitchen a strong visual anchor.

Open illuminated cabinetry at either end helped soften the transition into the taller elements, allowing the space to remain open and expansive rather than visually heavy.

A KITCHEN THAT MAKES THE HOME

For homeowners, developers and estate agents, the kitchen is often one of the spaces that most strongly shapes a property.

At The Barn, our design was intended to do more than function well, it needed to reinforce the architecture, create a memorable focal point and help the whole home feel more considered and complete.
